Try to arrive at Akkara just as the Meenachil River catches the late afternoon sun, its waters curving gently around the estate like a protective arm, and you will understand why they call Kerala God’s own country. The air here feels different—fragrant with the smell of pepper vines, warm from the red laterite soil, and alive with birdsong. It’s not long before Akkara makes a home in your heart.
Set on four and a half lush acres, Akkara is a 210-year-old Syrian Christian ancestral home that opens its heart and history to travellers. It’s an intimate stay—tended with care and never stripped of its soul. You’ll walk on 175-year-old tiled floors and rest in air-conditioned rooms that still whisper stories of generations past. “We’ve kept the original façade and feel intact,” says Mr. Kurien CK, your host and storyteller-in-residence. “But inside, we’ve made sure you’re comfortable—ensuite bathrooms, AC, everything you’d expect in a modern homestay.”
Your hosts, the Kurien family, are not in the business of running a hotel. They are sharing their legacy. Over chai or dinner, you might hear about family weddings that once filled Akkara’s lawns with music and laughter—or the ancient churches of Kottayam, some built by the family’s ancestors. “Our home was always full of people,” Kurien smiles. “Guests who stay with us often end up becoming a part of the family—they’ve even joined us at weddings!”

Meals are a highlight—home-cooked, deeply flavourful, and made under the watchful eye of the matriarch of Akkara. Think peppery chicken curry, creamy fish moilee, and fluffy appams, served with quiet pride in a setting that feels as warm as it is welcoming. “At Akkara, we want you to taste what we grew up eating,” Kurien says. “It’s authentic Syrian Christian food, and every dish tells a story.” A delicacy not to be missed is pani, the delicate and floral palm honey that is sourced locally.
The land, too, is generous. Spice trees—nutmeg, ginger, turmeric, and coffee—line the walkways. Mornings begin with yoga on the lawn, and an Ayurvedic massage might follow in the spa tucked under swaying palms. You can walk to the riverbank and spot a kingfisher darting over the water or sit under a mango tree with a book, the scent of jasmine thick in the air.
But it’s the little things that stay with you—the way Mr. Kurien remembers your name, the stories passed across the dinner table, the gentle rhythm of a household that has known both solitude and celebration. At Akkara, you’re not just a guest—you’re welcomed like family. And if you’d prefer solitude and silence, they’ll respect that too.
Come to Akkara for the river views, the spice-laden air, and the joy of doing nothing. Stay for the stories, cosy familiarity, and the sense that you’ve found a home you never knew you were missing.
